I Know Who I Am

1 Apr

I belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I know who I am.
I know God’s plan.
I’ll follow him in faith.
I believe in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
I’ll honor his name.
I’ll do what is right;
I’ll follow his light.
His truth I will proclaim.

This is a song from the Primary Hymn Book.  As we were putting our children to bed last night they started singing this song.  At first they could not remember how it started, as they had just learned it in church that day.  My four year old daughter had started with the second line, and just repeated two or three lines.  So my oldest asked me how it started.  I had not heard this song in well over a decade.  I had actually forgotten that it existed.  Yet I had learned it as a child when I was in primary, and when my children asked me the words I found that I had no trouble in recalling them and sang the song for them.  They then proceeded to sing it over and over for the next hour or so.

I like this song, as it declares several things that we should all remember.  First, it declares that this is the church of Christ, and that we are glad to acknowledge that we belong to his church.  It affirms our faith in Him and His gospel.  It states our resolve to obey His commands and preach His gospel.

But the most important thing that it teaches is our assurance of who we are and what our relation to God is.  We know who we are, and we know what God has planned for us.  I love this statement.  It is direct and clear, leaving no room for doubt.  In a world when so many people are lost, looking for light and searching to know who they are, is it not a great blessing that we can say that we know who we are; that we have no doubt as to our identity.  We are not wandering in the dark, grasping at things that we cannot comprehend.  We have the light of truth, and through it the assurance that our existence has meaning and purpose.
