Ancient of Days

Recently I have been thinking a great deal on the many prophecies that have been given and recorded in the scriptures; particularly those that deal with the last days. So I have decided to write some short posts addressing a few of these prophecies. Some have been fulfilled, some are in the process of being fulfilled, and some we are still waiting to see. I will draw from all the standard works, and in each post I will address only one prophesy.

Daniel 7: 9-14

I was recently reading another blog and came across a reference that made me think of this prophecy in Daniel. They  quoted D&C 27: 11, which says “And also with Michael, or Adam, the father of all, the prince of all, the ancient of days” and then tried to claim that this means the LDS believe that Adam and Heavenly Father are the same person. For those of you who don’t understand the connection that is being made let me explain. The title ‘Ancient of Days’ is used in Daniel chapter seven three times. Most of the Christian world believes this to be speaking of Heavenly Father. As such, when Joseph Smith refers to Adam as the Ancient of Days they tend to think he is teaching that Adam is Heavenly Father.

I feel this needs to be understood before one can truly understand the prophecy of Daniel chapter seven. Joseph Smith stated that Adam is called the Ancient of Days because he was the “…first and oldest of all, the great, grand progenitor…because he was the first and father of all, not only by progeny, but the first to hold the spiritual blessings…and to whom Christ was first revealed…” (Teaching of Joseph Smith, pg 167) Adam is the ancient one, or one of many days, as he is the first and oldest of the human race. Heavenly Father is “before the day was,” (Isaiah 43: 13) and is “without beginning of days or end of years” (Alma 13: 9) and thus is not ancient in days.

Now, Daniel chapter seven is a very complex prophecy, and so I will address only a small portion at this time. In the first eight verses Daniel sees four great beasts, the last having ten horns, and one horn that rose up over three. Later in the chapter Daniel is given a kind of interpretation, in which he is told that the beasts and horns represent kings that would rise up in the earth. What happens after the fourth beast is what we are interesting in.

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

So, the worldly governments will be cast down and Adam will sit on a throne of glory.

A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

This is to be a great gathering, just like the one that occurred three years before Adam died, when all his righteous posterity “rose up and blessed Adam, and called him Michael, the prince, the archangel.” (D&C 107: 54) In the same way all the righteous will be gathered again to honor Adam, the Ancient of Days; at which time he will exercise his rights as the Head of the Human family and judge the people; and that judgment will come through the records that have been kept.

I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.

As the beasts represent kings and earthly powers we can see how all dominion will be taken from the world. This will be done by the Ancient of Days, or through his direction.

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

At this great gathering Christ, the Son of Man, will make an appearance. He will be brought before the throne of Adam; at which point Adam, acting as the great patriarch, will turn over all Priesthood keys and dominion over the Earth will be given to Christ, who will rule His kingdom in Glory forever.

Joseph Smith offered this “…Father Adam…will call his children together…to prepare them for the coming of the Son of Man. He is the father of the human family…and all that have had the keys must stand before him in this grand council…The Son of Man stands before him, and there is given him glory and dominion. Adam delivers up his stewardship to Christ, that which was delivered to him as holding the keys of the universe, but retains his standing as head of the human family.” (Teaching of Joseph Smith pg 157).
